"For me therapy isn’t just about tools and strategies. I love hearing clients say they feel better at the end of the session than they did when they walked in!"

Mathew Keany | Counsellor & Couples Therapist

Mathew and his little therapy dog, Winston, have been working with 12 Points Psychology as an animal-assisted therapy team since 2020. Along with Danielle and Trish, Mathew was one of the founders of 12 Points Psychology and working so closely with all of our clients and clinicians helped him realise that it was time to leave his nearly 20-years in educational publishing for a new and rewarding career in mental health and counselling.

Who Mathew works with...

...individuals aged 18+ who may be experiencing difficulties such as relationship breakdowns, self-esteem issues, life transitions, grief and loss (including pet bereavement), or finding their motivation in life.

He has a special affinity for clients who have been identified as neurodivergent and is particularly passionate about supporting "neurospicy" couples—where one partner may be neurodivergent (e.g., ADHD or autistic) and the other is neurotypical or has a different neurotype.

Mathew brings both his professional expertise and lived experience as part of a neurospicy couple to his practice, offering a unique and empathetic perspective.

As well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which is designed to help develop psychological flexibility and EMDR (to process chronic or past traumas, that may be keeping you 'stuck' or plateauing treatment.

Mathew especially enjoys helping couples learn how to communicate and connect more effectively with each other and with themselves. His ongoing professional development is focused on neuroaffirming practices for both individuals and couples, and in 2024 he is undertaking a Masters Degree in Mental Health to ensure that his approach continues to be up-to-date with the latest research evidence, inclusive and empowering.

Mathew's approach to therapy is...

Mathew takes a calm, supportive approach to therapy, helping clients navigate life's challenges with empathy and understanding. He is uniquely placed to assist those considering a career change, drawing from his own experience of making a significant professional shift later in life.

Whether working with individuals or couples, Mathew's goal is to create a safe and affirming space where clients can explore their feelings, build resilience, and achieve meaningful, personal growth.
